Education & Experience

Catherine Verbyla is a performer and educator based in Colorado. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Music Education from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and Master’s Degree in Horn Performance from the University of Northern Colorado as the teaching assistant to Grammy award winning horn player, Ms. Marian Hesse.

At the age of 24, Catherine has performed in Europe several times. This includes the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, a tour of Italy, France and Spain with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, and most recently as principal horn in Prague, Czech Republic for the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Festival. She has also been a principal Northern Tier Symphony Orchestra, second horn in the Longmont Symphony Orchestra, and presently a section horn member of the Boulder Symphony Orchestra. She has also recorded the music of Mike Udow, composer, with the Colorado Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to performing, Catherine and her horn quartet, the Horns of Northern Colorado (HONC) have performed many masterclasses to students of all ages in schools around Colorado.

Students of Ms. Verbyla have enjoyed her quirky personality and non-stop dedication to their growth as players and people:
“Lessons with Cathy are efficient and really helpful for growing as a musician. Cathy has great experience playing horn and passes her experience on well, which helped me become a better horn player.”
–Hannah Baeza, sophomore Horn Performance major at University of Northern Colorado
